Lottery Odds Compared: Nigerian Games vs International Games

Last updated: August 2026

Nigerian players increasingly see results for UK Lotto, EuroMillions, Thunderball and EuroDreams alongside domestic games, and the international jackpots are large enough to raise an obvious question: are the odds better somewhere else? The figures can be calculated exactly, and comparing them properly requires setting the headline prize aside and looking only at the probability.

The Jackpot Odds, Side by Side

Each of these is the number of possible combinations in the game, which is also the odds against a single entry taking the top prize.

  • UK Thunderball, 5 from 39 plus 1 from 14: 8,060,598 combinations
  • EuroDreams, 6 from 40 plus 1 from 5: 19,191,900 combinations
  • Nigerian 5/90, all five numbers: 43,949,268 combinations
  • UK Lotto, 6 from 59: 45,057,474 combinations
  • US Powerball, 5 from 69 plus 1 from 26: 292,201,338 combinations
  • EuroMillions, 5 from 50 plus 2 from 12: 139,838,160 combinations

The spread is enormous. Thunderball’s top prize is roughly 36 times more achievable than EuroMillions’, and the Nigerian 5/90 top target sits close to UK Lotto in difficulty despite drawing from a very different pool structure.

Why the Pool Structure Matters More Than Pool Size

A common assumption is that a bigger number pool means longer odds. The comparison above shows this is only loosely true, because how many numbers you must match matters far more than how many exist.

Nigerian 5/90 draws from a pool of ninety, much larger than UK Lotto’s fifty-nine. Yet UK Lotto is the harder game, at 45.06 million against 43.95 million. The reason is that UK Lotto asks for six matches rather than five. Each additional number you have to match multiplies the difficulty by a large factor, and that multiplication overwhelms the difference in pool size.

The bonus-ball structure has the same effect. EuroMillions draws five from fifty, which alone gives 2,118,760 combinations, a genuinely modest figure. Requiring two Lucky Stars from twelve multiplies it by 66 and pushes the game past 139 million. The second pool is doing most of the work.

Jackpot Odds Are the Wrong Comparison

Comparing top prizes across these games is close to meaningless for most players, because almost nobody structures their play around the jackpot alone.

Nigerian lotto in particular is not primarily a jackpot game in the way UK Lotto is. Most domestic staking happens on smaller bet types where you select two or three numbers and need them among the five drawn. Those carry vastly shorter odds, roughly one in 400 for a two-number bet and around one in 11,748 for a three-number bet in a 5/90 game.

Set against that, the international games have their own lower prize tiers. Matching three numbers in UK Lotto sits at roughly one in 97, and the lowest Thunderball tier is shorter still. Comparing a Nigerian two-number bet to a EuroMillions jackpot is comparing entirely different products that happen to share the word lottery.

The Comparison That Actually Matters

Probability is only half of value. The other half is what you are paid when the probability lands, and that is where domestic and international games differ in kind rather than degree.

Nigerian lotto bet types are predominantly fixed-odds. The multiplier is known in advance, so the payout ratio can be calculated directly by dividing the offered multiplier by the fair one. A two-number bet with true odds of one in 400.5 paying 240 times the stake is running a payout ratio near 60%.

UK Lotto, EuroMillions and EuroDreams work on a pari-mutuel or fixed-prize-fund basis at most tiers. A defined share of ticket sales forms the prize fund, and the amount an individual winner receives depends on how many others share that tier. This means the value of a win is not knowable in advance and falls as more people win it.

Neither model is superior, but they fail differently. Fixed odds tell you precisely what you will receive and precisely what the house edge is. Pari-mutuel gives you a prize that can be extraordinary when few people share it and disappointing when many do, with rollovers producing the very large headline figures that draw attention in the first place.

What the Headline Figures Conceal

Large advertised jackpots are effective marketing precisely because the human mind handles very large numbers poorly. The difference between one in 44 million and one in 292 million does not feel proportionate to its actual scale, so a prize seven times larger reads as better value even when the odds are almost seven times worse.

Converting to a common basis helps. If you staked one entry per week on a game with one in 292 million odds, the expected wait for a jackpot is roughly 5.6 million years. On a one in 8 million game it is about 155,000 years. Both figures are absurd on a human timescale, which is the honest conclusion: the practical difference between them is not that one is achievable.

This is also why advertised jackpot size should carry almost no weight in choosing what to play. A rolling jackpot changes the prize but not the probability, and the probability is what determines whether you will ever see it.

Practical Notes for Nigerian Players

Before treating international games as an alternative rather than a curiosity, two practical points are worth checking.

Access varies. Some international lotteries are available to players outside their home country only through third-party services rather than the official operator, and the terms of those arrangements differ significantly from buying a ticket directly. Verify what you are actually purchasing and who is liable for paying a prize before staking.

Tax and claim procedures differ by jurisdiction, and a prize won in another country is not automatically straightforward to claim or repatriate. These are questions to resolve before staking, not after.

The underlying mathematics is the same everywhere. Every game listed here carries negative expected value for the player, and the operator’s margin is built into the structure regardless of which flag is on it. Comparing odds across games is worth doing, but it identifies which game is least unfavourable, not which one is favourable.
